Survey Respondent Info

Women answered the survey far more often than men did. Of the 35 "Other or None" responses, 11 indicated "Other"; 24 did not input a gender. Two respondents selected both "Male" and "Female".

Letter Frequency

Differences in gender were not significant. Introverts outnumbered extroverts. Intuition (think in concepts; abstract) dominated sensing (think in data; 5 senses). Feeling/thinking was close to 50-50; judgers (disciplined, scheduled) slightly outnumbered perceivers (spontaneous, adaptable). Between male and female, male introversion and perceiving were more common. Click here for letter meanings (note that J vs P, which is not as significant, is not included. A rough translation, though not fully accurate, is that J means disciplined/scheduled while P means spontaneous/adaptable).

Type Frequency

The chart you've all been waiting for. INTJ, INFJ, INTP, and INFP dominated. The patterns seen in letter frequency are observed here as well. Any "N" was in the 8 most common; any "S" in the 8 rarest at MIT. If we subdivide, "I" is more common than "E". Then "T" and "J" slightly outnumber "F" and "P".

Function Frequency

Given the dominance of intuition over sensing, it is no surprise that their associated functions are very common. The chart includes a function if it is present in the two main functions of a personality type, regardless of order. MIT vs General Population

The dominance of iNtuition over Sensing is the most obvious conclusion. MIT, an intellectual and curiosity-driven college, has a much higher proportion of (abstract) thinkers than the population. INFJ, the rarest type in the general population, is 2nd place at MIT! Click here for the distribution of the general population.

Quirks and Stats

→ 8% of respondents left comments. Among these:

→ 13 mentioned switching personalities or near-misses;

→ 7 were exclamations and random utterances;

→ 6 indicated A vs T (a fifth letter sometimes used e.g. ENTJ-A. "Assertive" means low neuroticism and "Turbulent" means high neuroticism);

→ 6 personal notes;

→ 5 TCC (Tech Catholic Community) members;

→ 3 people eager to see results;

→ 3 suggestions for the survey;

→ 1 Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ) member.

→ A biased survey? As this survey was dormspammed, off-campus MIT students (especially frat-dwellers) are likely to have missed this survey entirely, as they do not receive dormspam. My guess is that the "S" and "E" proportion will increase if the survey went to them. Sloanies (e.g. MBAs) also did not receive the survey; they would also probably increase the "S" and "E" proportions.

→ My favorite comment: "your website is the weirdest ive ever read". To its writer: thank you!

→ My friend and guest author had great predictions! In particular:

→ INTP was close to the most common type for men (15; highest 16: INTJ, INFP)

→ INTJ was indeed most common for women; INFJ was second!

→ Indeed, far more women filled out the survey than men

→ MIT does have a lot more N's than S's.

→ Actually, Judgers outweighed Perceivers.

→ Introverts outweighed extraverts 64-36 (prediction: 60-40).
